American Toad

butterflyImageThe American Toad is found from Manitoba east to the Maritimes. One American Toad can eat up to 1,000 insects every day.

Where to look
– American Toads are found in almost any habitat, from mown grass and farmers’ fields to thick forests. They like to be near dense plants for cover and hunting. During daylight hours they seek cover beneath flat stones, boards, logs and wood piles.

What to look for – The American Toad is large and squat with warty brown, reddish, olive or gray skin and variously coloured spots and skin glands. There is often a light line down the middle of the back. The bellies are white and speckled.

When to find them – American Toads are mainly nocturnal, and are most active when the weather is warm and humid. During the day American Toads hide under rocks or logs or dig into dead leaves and soil. Toads do not drink water but soak it in, absorbing moisture through their skin.

WOW!

American Toads have poison glands to put off predators. A dog that picks up a toad will foam at the mouth but will not be hurt.
