Wood Frog

butterflyImageThe Wood Frog is the most widely distributed amphibian in North America, even reaching beyond the Arctic circle!

Where to look – The Wood Frog is likely to be found in moist woodlands and are most active during the day as they hunt for food.

What to look for – This little frog can be found in a number of colours: usually browns, tans and rust, but can also be found in shades of green or gray. In all cases though, this frog has a black patch on its head that looks like a ‘robber’s mask’ underlined by a whitish lip.

When to find them – Wood Frogs hibernate under logs or leaf litter on the forest floor in winter. They are the earliest frogs to breed in spring and often beginning to call for a mate when there is still ice on the ponds. They wander far and wide in summer and fall, looking for insects to eat.

WOW!

The Wood Frog spends winter frozen solid. Ice crystals form under its skin and its breathing and heart beat stop!
